Friends Organizations
Quakers here and around the world support a variety of local, national and international organizations, both financially and with personal involvement. Below are some acronyms for these organizations you might have heard of!
Friends Organizations and Acronyms:
SLMM: Salt Lake Monthly Meeting. Also known as the Salt Lake Religious Society of Friends. The ‘monthly meeting’ refers to how often we meet for business (to discuss issues of governance).
UFF: Utah Friends Fellowship. Comprised of unprogrammed Monthly Meetings and Worship Groups in Salt Lake, Logan, and Moab.
IMYM: Intermountain Yearly Meeting. Comprised of unprogrammed Monthly Meetings and Worship Groups in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, South Dakota and northwest Texas.
FWCC: Friends World Committee for Consultation. The purpose of the Friends World Committee for Consultation is to encourage fellowship among all the branches of the Religious Society of Friends. Americas Section.
AFSC: American Friends Service Committee. The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service around the world.
FCNL: Friends Committee on National Legislation. Founded in 1943 it is the largest peace lobby in Washington. It advocates social and economic justice, peace, and good government.
FGC: Friends General Conference. A Quaker organization in the unprogrammed tradition of the Religious Society of Friends which primarily serves affiliated yearly and monthly meetings (i.e. has an annual national conference organized by a committee of representatives from yearly meetings).
QUF: Quaker Universalist Friends. The mission of The Quaker Universalist Friends is to foster the understanding that within everyone is a directly accessible spiritual light that can lead people to equality, simplicity, justice, compassion and peace.
QEW: Quaker Earthcare Witness is a spiritually-centered organization of American Quakers and like-minded people seeking ways to integrate their concern for environment with Friends’ long-standing testimonies for simplicity, peace, and equality.
QIF: Quaker Institute for the Future.The Quanker Institute for the Future seeks to develop an institute that can carry on Friends’ experiments with Truth in the context of research work that will provide the foundations for the applications of our testimonies undertaken by AFSC, FCNL and other Quaker bodies and meetings.
