Governance Overview

“The purpose of organization is to provide orderly and effective means for handling corporate business essential to the Meeting’s functioning with a maximum of freedom, participation, and responsibility.” From the Faith and Practice of the Intermountain Yearly Meeting (IMYM).

Reaching Decisions Through Unity

“Friends conduct business together in the faith that there is one divine Spirit which is accessible to all persons; when Friends wait upon, heed and follow the Light of Truth within them, its Spirit will lead to unity…The Quaker method for reaching decisions involves searching for the right corporate decisions and arriving at a ‘sense of the meeting,’ or reaching unity…Friends are urged to seek Divine guidance at all times, be mutually forbearing, and be concerned for the good of the Meeting as a whole rather than to press a person preference.” From the Faith and Practice of the North Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.

Monthly Meeting (Meeting for Business)

The term Monthly Meeting has two meanings; it refers to the meeting the community has once a month to conduct business (different than the weekly meetings for worship), and it also is a reference to the community itself. The meeting for business is usually conducted after meeting for worship on the second Sunday of each month.

“The meeting for business takes place in the same expectant waiting for the Spirit’s guidance as does any Meeting for Worship. Friends’ manner of conducting business is an expression of our faith that the Light, which is in all, when heeded, draws all into unity in our common affairs. It is an expression of our commitment to follow that Light.

A Monthly Meeting has many functions: it receives, records, and terminates memberships; provides spiritual and material aid to those in its fellowship; oversees marriages; gives care at the time of death; and counsels with members in troubled circumstances. It collects and administers funds for its maintenance and work, and may hold property of a fiduciary nature as well as titles to real property. Meetings witness to Friends’ testimonies and relate to other Quaker organizations and friends who share common concerns.”

From the Faith and Practice of the Intermountain Yearly Meeting (IMYM).

Policies

Guidelines for the use of the Meeting House

Salt Lake Monthly Meeting wants to make available to its members and regular attenders the right to use the Meeting House for their special needs or activities. Also the SLMM would like to make the Meeting House available to outside groups that share ideals of Quakerism. We would hope that these activities would be consistent with the spirit of Quakerism.

There are expenses in maintaining the Meeting House such as lighting, heating and janitorial. With those expenses in mind we
would ask any group using the Meeting to contribute towards those expenses. The recommended reimbursement is $25 per hour or a daily rate can be provided upon request.

Of course we would expect any group using the meeting to leave it in the same or better condition than they found it. A member of the Home Committee will be happy to arrange a date and open the building.
